Also at the September 2010 Apple event, announced was a new AppleTV. Steve Jobs called AppleTV a hobby, probably because it hasn’t really been a big hit on the market. Well they have a good product here, but I think they they might have some competition with the Boxee Box and the Roku Player.

The AppleTV is a streaming device. With it, you can access your content from your computers, or renting TV shows and Movies through iTunes on the AppleTV, or through NetFlix, YouTube, Flickr or MobileMe for a price of $99.

Honestly, I don’t care about this because I think that the Boxee Box will deliver my content at a better price then Apple will. The Boxee Box will be able to pick up streams from sources on the internet (ie CBS.com, ABC.com, NBC.com, etc.) and bring it to your TV for FREE, including streams from NetFlix, Pandora, and more.

Plus I don’t see the point in renting TV Shows for .99 cents when you can get it all for free over an antenna, which I can show you how to build for about $20.

What I do find interesting about the AppleTV is what they are planning with the 4.2 update of iOS. In the 4.2 iOS, scheduled to be released in November probably with new iPads, you will get a feature called AirPlay. What this does is when you are watching a video on your iPhone / iPod Touch, you will be able to press one button and it will automatically sync up to stream over your AppleTV onto your screen!

My only question here is, will this work for any app that uses the video feature, or is it limited to only certain videos?

Let’s get back to the Boxee Box! First of all, if you want to test out the Boxee program, simply go to Boxee.com and install it.

After Apple announced their Apple TV, Boxee, which is planning to get their box into customer hands by November, announced the pricing for the Boxee Box, which is $199. So now you must ask, is the extra $100 worth it?

With the Boxee Box, you will be able to get content from all over the internet through apps. A third party creator can create their own app and have it available on Boxee. You can get the most updated content from that creator, whether they are big Hollywood style company or a simple YouTuber, like myself.

I would be curious to know if Apple is planning on bringing an app type of market to the Apple TV. If they do that, that will be a killer for the Boxee Box. Here is the demo of the Boxee Box:

The Roku Box is kind of in the middle of these devices. First of all, it has the best price point at between $59, $69 and $99. Second, this is the only set top box that connects with Amazon Video on Demand, which works similar to what Apple TV mixed with iTunes would do, being that you have to either rent or purchase the videos. Amazon Video on Demand also has about 4 times more movies as NetFlix, and this is why it is a good competitor.

Honestly, I think that the Roku Box is not as aesthetically pleasing then the Boxee Box or the Apple TV. Plus, I think that the Boxee Box will give you access to more content than the Apple TV or the Roku Box will.

If you have any more info about other set top boxes like these or more info on these boxes, please let me know in the comments below.

Apple unveiled their new iPod line-up today, and they have redesigned all of their iPod products.

First, let’s talk about the iPod Shuffle. This is probably the device that I will get to replace the old 5th Gen iPod that I have in my car.

When I get into my car, the first thing I do is put my iPod on shuffle. I really don’t care what’s playing, just as long as something is playing, and if I don’t want to listen to a certain song, I want to be able to click to the next song without taking my eyes off the road.

With the iPod Shuffle, I can do that. Now you might say, “Lane, why don’t you just find a used 2nd Gen iPod Shuffle instead of buying a new one”? Well the answer to that is, right now on eBay, they are pretty much the same price: $50. I might as well get a new one as opposed to an old one.

My only complaint about the iPod Shuffle is that it won’t be able to hold all of my music because it doesn’t have the storage capacity, but I think I need to weed out some of the music in my iTunes Library anyway, so once I do that, I think I can fit what I want! Plus I still have my old 5th Gen iPod if I want to take that on car trips.

Second new iPod is the iPod Nano. This iPod is probably the one with the most drastic change. With the iPod Nano, they have gotten rid of the click wheel and buttons and made a small touch screen just for the music apps you need for a Nano. I think that this is a great idea.

It is just a little bit bigger than the iPod Shuffle, and if you want a little more storage on it then the iPod Shuffle, then this is the device for you, unless you want to use it in your car (like I do).

If I went to get an iPod Nano instead of the iPod Shuffle, then if I wanted to change the song, I would have to look down at the device, taking my eyes off the road, and use the touch controls to find the song I want. If they would only give the iPod Shuffle a little bit more space I would be happy. Until then, I’ll stick with the Shuffle.

Both the iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffle come with clips on the back of them in case you want to use it on your person.

Third is the iPod Touch. Apple has taken the iPod Touch and made it even thinner while added to it two cameras (finally, one on the front and one on the back), and they have integrated FaceTime over Wi-Fi with it, plus you can record HD videos with the back facing camera. They have also added the Retina display and the Gyroscope to the iPod Touch.

An update for iOS 4.1 should be available soon for download includes an update to the camera software. If you turn on HDR for photos, it takes 3 photos with different exposures and it uses an antilogarithm to create the perfect picture for you with no over or under exposures!

Also in this update, you will be able to upload HD videos to YouTube right from your phone without having to go through a 3rd party app like Pixelpipe or 720Tube.

Another addition to this update is the GameCenter app, which was demoed at the live event showing a fighting game between two people on two different devices over the network. It seemed to work really well, and I was impressed by the quality of the fighting game that was demoed.

Ohh… and if you care, you can rent TV shows on the device.
