Also at the September 2010 Apple event, announced was a new AppleTV. Steve Jobs called AppleTV a hobby, probably because it hasn’t really been a big hit on the market. Well they have a good product here, but I think they they might have some competition with the Boxee Box and the Roku Player.

The AppleTV is a streaming device. With it, you can access your content from your computers, or renting TV shows and Movies through iTunes on the AppleTV, or through NetFlix, YouTube, Flickr or MobileMe for a price of $99.
Honestly, I don’t care about this because I think that the Boxee Box will deliver my content at a better price then Apple will. The Boxee Box will be able to pick up streams from sources on the internet (ie CBS.com, ABC.com, NBC.com, etc.) and bring it to your TV for FREE, including streams from NetFlix, Pandora, and more.

Plus I don’t see the point in renting TV Shows for .99 cents when you can get it all for free over an antenna, which I can show you how to build for about $20.

What I do find interesting about the AppleTV is what they are planning with the 4.2 update of iOS. In the 4.2 iOS, scheduled to be released in November probably with new iPads, you will get a feature called AirPlay. What this does is when you are watching a video on your iPhone / iPod Touch, you will be able to press one button and it will automatically sync up to stream over your AppleTV onto your screen!

My only question here is, will this work for any app that uses the video feature, or is it limited to only certain videos?
Let’s get back to the Boxee Box! First of all, if you want to test out the Boxee program, simply go to Boxee.com and install it.

After Apple announced their Apple TV, Boxee, which is planning to get their box into customer hands by November, announced the pricing for the Boxee Box, which is $199. So now you must ask, is the extra $100 worth it?
With the Boxee Box, you will be able to get content from all over the internet through apps. A third party creator can create their own app and have it available on Boxee. You can get the most updated content from that creator, whether they are big Hollywood style company or a simple YouTuber, like myself.

I would be curious to know if Apple is planning on bringing an app type of market to the Apple TV. If they do that, that will be a killer for the Boxee Box. Here is the demo of the Boxee Box:
The Roku Box is kind of in the middle of these devices. First of all, it has the best price point at between $59, $69 and $99. Second, this is the only set top box that connects with Amazon Video on Demand, which works similar to what Apple TV mixed with iTunes would do, being that you have to either rent or purchase the videos. Amazon Video on Demand also has about 4 times more movies as NetFlix, and this is why it is a good competitor.

Honestly, I think that the Roku Box is not as aesthetically pleasing then the Boxee Box or the Apple TV. Plus, I think that the Boxee Box will give you access to more content than the Apple TV or the Roku Box will.
If you have any more info about other set top boxes like these or more info on these boxes, please let me know in the comments below.
