Are you looking for a low-cost hotel in Carlsbad, New Mexico? We've arrived at the MainStay Suites, and I'd like to show you around, give you a hotel tour, and show you around the hotel room. This is the lobby; they have a lot of stuff here, and the guys who work here are great. There is a small sitting area as well as a computer station. They usually serve breakfast, but due to COVID, they cannot do so right now. I'll then take the elevator upstairs and show you around the rooms. We're staying on the fourth floor.
I like MainStay suites hotels because they are inexpensive but provide a lot of amenities. We're currently in a suite. They gave us the handicapped one because we have three children, and it has been fantastic. It has a lot of extra space that you won't find in other rooms. There is an ice machine near the elevator at the end of the floor, and laundry services are available on the third and first floors. The washing machine costs $1.75, and the dryer costs $1.50. They have a gravel parking lot for trailers and RVs and regular parking.
The Kitchen
We stayed here last night and will stay here again tonight. When you walk in, this is the first thing you see. It's a huge space. The full refrigerator and freezer were the first things we noticed in the kitchen. We've stocked it with food because there's a grocery store nearby. Cabinets are also available. There was nothing in them, but you can stock them if you decide to bring extra food. We have a good-sized GE microwave with a turnplate. Two larger plates and bowls, two smaller cups, two larger cups, and a toaster are provided. A coffee machine with coffee and tea is available, as is a two-burner cooktop. We cooked some bacon in it earlier today, and it worked perfectly. We stayed in a hotel in San Antonio and had issues with the cooktop. This one worked much better than the previous one.
There is a nice sink with good water pressure, but I wish it were bigger for doing dishes. It's small, but you only get a few dishes, so you don't need much room. The room includes one of those low-profile dishwashers about half the size of a standard dishwasher. Inside, you can fit all of the pots, plates, and utensils they give you. There are measuring cups, which are extremely useful if you enjoy cooking, and pots, holders, and cooking utensils, including a can opener.
Tons of Space
They provide plenty of space if you're staying for an extended period. We have a sleeper sofa with everything you need to make the bed, including blankets and pillows. It was very comfortable and simple to convert back to a regular-sized couch.
Beds & Bedding
I slept soundly on the side of the bed. This hotel's pillows are nice. They're extremely mushy. I like to sleep on the seam's corner, the middle section, and the sides, allowing the wings to flap up to block out some of the light.
Thanks to the Concierge Queen 60 X 80 topper, the mattress was extremely comfortable. The mattress is the Serta Perfect Sleeper Kingsley, which is a fantastic mattress, and the bamboo topper makes a significant difference. They provide an alarm clock, a small shelf with a Bible, some drawers, and another bed. On the other side, there is a nightstand. Not all hotels provide a nightstand on each side of the bed. This is useful because it provides more storage space.
Other Amenities
Each suite has an air conditioning unit, which will come in handy during the hot summers in New Mexico. It's extremely hot during the day. Our thermostat is located near the door and is simple to operate. Press it up and down to adjust the temperature to your liking. It also has fan and heat modes if you're coming in the winter, though I have no idea what a New Mexico winter is like. There are a couple more cabinets on the side for any miscellaneous items you want to store. I like how one of them is higher when traveling with small children. There's a flat tabletop with a small desk lamp if you need to work. It does not, however, have any drawers.
The Cons
One complaint about this hotel is that it lacks a dining table. We prefer to eat together as a family at a table. But we're a family of five, and it isn't easy to eat together because there are only two chairs. I've noticed this in several hotels. Because there weren't enough chairs of the same height, some of us had to sit on the bed, which isn't a major flaw. I have yet to find a hotel that does at this price.
TV
The television is an LG flat-screen with numerous channels. The kids were enthralled by everything Disney and Nickelodeon. In front of a closet space/play kid's area, our room has a small bench that can be used as a luggage bench. We have a large closet with three shelves, a hanging rack, and additional drawers to help you organize your clothes.
Bathroom
Because it is a handicapped bathroom, our bathroom is quite large. It has adequate overhead lighting, four outlets, and night lights to illuminate the space without the need for larger lights. There's more storage under the sink now and a nice Delta faucet. The water becomes extremely hot, and there are several pressure settings available. The shower has a deep tub and a hookless curtain that winds out of the way when you don't need it. The toilet has a good flush and is a pro-flow toilet.
Outside
Our window looks out onto the parking lot. My kids are having a game of cornhole down there. The hotel also has a large Connect-Four game and two grills with utensils, which can be reserved at the front desk. The service has been excellent. If you're looking for a cheap place in Carlsbad, I highly recommend it. Denise at the front desk informed me that this hotel was completed in November of 2020. We're staying here in June 2021, so it hasn't even been a year. The mattress was still wrapped in shrink wrap.
