Ice Cream & Prada: Our Pit Stop in Fort Davis

Our Family Survived Downtown Fort Davis... This is What Happened!

The Travel Vlog Family

Day 1

Hey, guys, we made it to Fort Davis, Texas, and we are going to be staying in this camper right here because tomorrow we're going to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Let's go check it out. Ready to go inside?

This looks nice and is perfect. We have a master bedroom at the back here. Got some closet space here. We got a shower in here. I think this camper will be perfect for us, especially after having a night in the teepee, because the teepee was fun; it was a great experience. But Becket had a little trouble falling asleep, so it would be nice to have something that feels more like home. Got the kitchen and the stove. Well, this is going to be great. Let's unpack.

We got our stuff inside the van for today and tomorrow morning. We need to get some gas and some dinner, and then we'll sleep. We need some breakfast too which means we probably need to find a restaurant and maybe a grocery store. The restaurants are killing us with our budget. And also, gas is a little more expensive here. I haven't seen a gas station here in Fort Davis, but over in Marathon, it was like $3.27 a gallon. I'm hoping to find gas for around $3, and under so we don't spend much on gas.

We're going to get some sandwiches. We found a store. I wasn't sure if they had dinner, but we saw tables, so we thought we'd try it. Our food came out to $38.75. Krista had a sandwich with pastrami, avocado, olives, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, mayo, and spicy mustard. I had a ham sandwich. They had an old payphone the kids played with. It didn't work anymore. It'll be a relic one day. How's your sandwich, Krista?

"It's really good. I watched them make it, it was good. Strawberry, avocado, olives, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, Mayo, spice, and mustard. Delicious."

My sandwich is delicious, too. It's a Ham sandwich.

"Becket, I've got a question for you. Do you know what this is?"

"Yeah."

"What is that?" It is a telephone. Look, listen to the sound it makes. It doesn't make a sound. It must not work anymore. Yeah, it's going to be a relic one day. Yes, press the button. Who are you talking to? Is that Mimi on there, or are that Grammy and Grumps?

We found a grocery store, which is one of the things we needed. And they also have gas, and it's also only $2.99, so I'm excited about that. We need to fill up still, though, but groceries first.

I got enough breakfast sausage to take two days maybe three days of groceries.

We bought 2-3 days' worth of groceries for $66.91.

Ok, we ate dinner. That means it's time for ice cream. And Krista found this cute little caboose place. The whole shop is inside; this is cool. The cutest little ice cream shop. That looks so good.

Well, that was the funnest little ice cream shop. $6.50 for three of those. Well worth it. I'm guessing each of them was $2 and something.

We are stopping to get some gas. Porters was closing. We wanted to get the ice cream before they closed, so we just found a gas station along the way. It's a little bit more. This will get us to where we want to go tomorrow, though. This is $3.03 cents a gallon which is 3 cents more than what I wanted. But that's okay. It had a fast pump. $49.5. Jeez.

Ready? Yes. We got groceries. We got gas. We got ice cream. We got food. Now let's sleep. How does that sound, mom?

"After I take some melatonin, it's going to sound great. We're going to sleep."

More things to bring into the camper van. I've got to find a place for all these groceries and other stuff now.

"Dad, you know the camera is recording."

Yes. What are you going to tell them? What do you think about this Airbnb?

It's awesome. It looks so different and all that.

Our Airbnb hosts had a few dogs and some chickens on the property. We didn't meet our hosts, but the dogs did a good job of making us feel welcome. The kids got to feed them. Everyone got a great night's sleep. Krista took melatonin to ensure she'd get a good night. The camper was pretty functional for us.

Day 2

Everyone got a great night's sleep here tonight. Krista took a melatonin last night, so she made sure that she got a good night's sleep. And this camper was pretty functional for us.

But now we want to go out to Marfa, Texas, because there is this weird art installation that I want to show you guys before we head to our next National Park. Let's go.

After leaving Fort Davis, we stopped in Marfa, Texas, to see a weird art installation. I want to show you before we continue to our next National Park.

It's a sealed Prada store called Prada Marfa, although it's technically in Valentine, Texas. It was erected in 2005, so all of the shoes and purses here are from 2005 and haven't been touched since. Nearby is a gate covered in locks. How many locks do you all think are on here? Did you realize that there are this many different kinds of locks in the world? They go all the way around. I want to know how many are on here. There are about 100 on each gate. My guess is that there are about 2500-3000 lots all the way around.

So this installation is technically considered a sculpture, and it will never function as a place of commerce because the door cannot be opened, there's no handle on the door, and it's locked. I think that's a security camera right there, too. I wonder if that's a live webcam feed. That'd be such a cool idea. Pretty neat roadside attraction, huh?

Time to get back in the adventure mobile. We drove and drove, and we're are now at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. If you guys want to see our day at the Guadalupe mountains, click here.  We'll see you next time. Thank you all for watching and go travel somewhere.
