We Stayed in a Teepee in Terlingua, Texas

The Travel Vlog Family

Are you looking for a unique place to stay in Terlingua, Texas? We are here to visit Big Bend National Park, and we found this unique experience that I have to show you. We stayed in a teepee last night! It was super cool. I'll show you the teepee and all the other amenities in the area. Later, I'll explain why this might not be the best place to stay with small kids.

The opening of the teepee faces the beautiful Big Bend Chisos Mountains. The view is gorgeous. They give you a hammock you can relax in after a long hike, or you could also sleep in it. The stars at night were beautiful and filled the entire sky. They have a little camping area outside for a fire pit. If you want to cook, they have firewood you can buy and a grate to use. We didn't use it because it was so hot outside. There are four chairs with a little table. It's the beginning of June, and last night's weather was perfect. It was probably in the lower 70s-upper 60s. I slept like a baby.

If you are coming with kids, beware that there are prickly cactuses everywhere and a barbed wire fence around the property.

Our Teepee

We slept in Las Estrellas, the biggest tent because we are a family of five and we needed the room. It zips up on both the inner and outer layers. The inner layer is mesh, so you can let the cool air come through with no bugs if you want to leave the door open. If you come later in the year when it's hotter, they give you a hurricane fan. You can create a nice breeze, especially if you put the fan in front.

Kitchen Area

The little kitchen area in our tent is pretty simple. There's a Keurig with coffee and tea, Splenda and sugar packets, and a mug for opening and stirring things. We have a mini-fridge. There's no freezer, but we put our water bottles in here, and they got ice cold. My water turned to ice. I made some coffee this morning, and the creamer was frozen. It can get quite cold if you don't open it too much.

Furniture & Decor

There's a little star lamp great for kids or anyone who may want a nightlight. Our kids got up and turned this on in the middle of the night, so it worked out well. There are feathers, a sign that says "Las Estrellas" because that's the tent's name, and string lights hanging from the top.

We have a futon with lots of plush blankets and fun little pillows. The futon opens into a nice bed that our two kids slept in. On the ground, on top of a bear rug, we put down a sleeping bag and lots of blankets to make a giant pallet for our two-year-old to sleep on, which worked well. We have a couple of chairs, although we mainly just stored stuff on them. It would have been better if there was a big table there instead.

If you come in the wintertime, there is a heater. There's also a bedside table. They give you a lot of information about local restaurants, things to do in the park, and shopping. Our bed was super comfortable; the mattress was from a brand called Lucid. It's on a piece of plywood held up by cinder blocks. When you first get here, it's covered with a tarp for protection. I got a great night's sleep. I went to bed at eleven and woke up at six.

There are regular fleece and electric blankets here, too, and a couple of bathrobes with the Buzzard's Roost logo, although we didn't use them. I'm sure the kids would have messed them up. There's a little storage box with a bunch of pillows inside.

Other Amenities

They have a common area where you can hang out. We did some star photography here last night, which was super neat. The tables in this space are quite loud, and kids might make a lot of noise with them. They're like drums. There are stakes around each teepee to hold it down and timbers holding it up. Our kids tripped on those a few times. You have to be careful because there are also cacti they could trip on.

Bathrooms

They have an outdoor shower with everything you need. It's decorated nicely with some plants. If you're not comfortable with the outdoor shower, you can also use the indoor shower. The restroom is a common space, but it's nicely decorated with a good sink and toilet.

This place was super cool, and I highly recommended it. If you want to see more things in Terlingua and the Big Bend area, I'll leave a video below. Dad out!
