First Time Camping in a Teepee

Our Family Camped in a Teepee for the First Time

The Travel Vlog Family

We made it to the Buzzard's Roost in Terlingua, Texas. Our accommodations for the night are a teepee! First, we need to get set up. Then, we're going to a restaurant in Terlingua. Third, we're going to have a hammock party. Finally, we want to see the stars at night. I've never seen the Milky Way Galaxy with no light, and I'm very excited to see it. I have no clue what the teepee will look like on the inside.

There are three teepees here. This teepee is called Las Estrellas. It's the biggest one, which is why we chose it. It's not cold, but it's not that hot. It's going to get cooler. There are tons of blankets and a sleeping bag. There's a welcome folder with some restaurants. We looked through it, and we're going to go to La Kiva restaurant and bar. It's supposed to be a cave bar, which sounds super cool. Hopefully, we'll be able to see all the stars in the sky tonight, maybe the most stars I've ever seen in my life.

Dinner in Terlingua

It turned out that the cave restaurant we wanted to go to is temporarily closed. We tried to go to a place called the Starlight Theater, but the wait was over an hour. Now, we're at the High Sierra Bar & Grill. It's not what we thought it was, but we'll eat here anyway. Everybody has their Topo Chico. I might have blown the budget on this one. I'm eating prickly pear tacos. It tastes like bell pepper and a pickle put together. I don't like it very much.

I'm proud of the kids for trying something new. I also got the flank steak with cheese. It's pretty good, although it could use a bit more flavor. It comes with a baked potato and a jalapeno wrapped in bacon. I'm not going to eat the baked potato, but I'll try the jalapeno wrapped in bacon. Everything cost $67.81. We came up with this new thing, the three Fs: Fast, Friendly, and Filling. This restaurant has achieved all three. Let's go set up our teepee.

Back to the Teepee

The bed has cinder blocks on the bottom and a piece of wood underneath the mattress. The older kids are going to sleep on the other bed. Becket will sleep on the rug with a sleeping bag, three thick blankets underneath, and a blanket on top of him, although I don't think he will need it because it might be a little warm tonight. It's going to be in the low 70s. I don't know how well we're going to sleep, but the air is so dry here that I think we'll be all right. Hopefully, it gets lower than what they're expecting. Our bed has plywood underneath. I'll let you know how we sleep tomorrow morning. We have a little sitting area with lamps and chargers and a mini-fridge with a Keurig coffee maker. I might need some of that in the morning.

Look at that view. Isn't it gorgeous? We plan to see if we can see some stars in the sky tonight. It's looking partly cloudy, so I'm curious to see what happens. Let's explore more of this campground and find where we'll take a shower. There are only three teepees at the Buzzard's Roost, so there will only be three people roaming around with you, which is nice. There's also a little common area. I'll show you the showers because this is a shower like I've never used before, and I'm excited about it. It looks like Krista has already made friends with our neighbors.

Bathrooms & Amenities

There's a little play area for the kids to use and a seating area with a ton of pillows where you can chill out under the stars. The bathroom is shared by everyone here. It's a little adobo building with a toilet and a light made from an ironing board with little stars that look like constellations. There are outdoor showers in another little building, which I want to try tomorrow and an indoor shower next to it. The outdoor shower is probably the most exciting part.

We've come on a perfect night. Someone here does star photography, and he invited us to hang out with him while he's shooting. It's going to be cool. You can line your equipment up beforehand and wait until it gets dark enough. The sunset is beautiful. It's time to snuggle up in our teepee. The astrophotography was so cool. I wish I could show you more, but it's too dark. We're going to go to sleep now.

Good morning! I slept so well last night. I need to find out what kind of mattress they have in there. The kids slept well on the futon. We're going to use the bathroom. Then, we need to figure out something for breakfast. Today's plan is to go into Big Bend and enjoy that for a bit. We want to do the Santa Elena hike, the scenic drives, and see some of the big spots along the way. Then, we're leaving and going to our next accommodation, which is totally different.

There are animal sculptures here that you can play on. There's a bouncy bird and a cool movable bird.

If you're looking to have this cool teepee experience, I'll put the link below. This place is only like $150 for a night, and we figured the experience of sleeping in a teepee was worth it, especially with views like this in the morning. It's incredible. We are leaving our teepees. We're going to explore Big Bend another day. If you want to see more of our explorations and where we're sleeping tonight, click the link below.
